Please make your heartfelt gift today!

From the time I was four years old, I knew I wanted to be a nurse. I’ve always liked helping people, caring for people, trying to make them feel better. Working at Collabria Care allows me to do just that.

Every day I’m inspired by the strength and courage of our participants, like Marilyn. Her ability to face any adversity head on and find joy in life is incredible, particularly in a year when we have all faced such great challenges.

Thanks to kind donors like you, this year we’ve continued caring for our participants through the pandemic and not one, but two wildfires.

I’m writing to you to ask for your help to ensure we can provide uninterrupted essential care through any disaster that comes our way–especially for those who are vulnerable and living alone, like Marilyn.

Marilyn joined our Day Program in 2008. As a recently retired widow with a developmental delay, she needed to find a team that would help manage her health, a community where she could easily socialize with others, and one-on-one support that would keep her independent.

It’s been 12 years since she joined the Day Program and, in that time, she’s made so many friends–staff and participants alike.

Earlier this year when she was diagnosed with kidney failure, things changed for Marilyn. She needed more support and thanks to Collabria’s unique continuum of care we were able to quickly introduce another layer of healthcare through our Palliative Care program. Then when her health declined further, she began to receive Hospice Care.

I had no doubt that my colleagues on our palliative care and hospice teams would care for Marilyn like we were doing in the Day Program. They had heartfelt conversations to make sure they understood what was most important to her so they could honor her end of life wishes. At the top of her list: to stay in her home of 48 years for the rest of her life.

Not long after her diagnosis, we had to suspend in-center programming because of COVID-19. I was very concerned that she would become isolated at home and disconnected from her friends in the Day Program. But as it turns out, I didn’t need to worry. She quickly joined our Zoom classes and is a regular attendee on days when she feels up to it. Her bright personality continues to be a ray of light in the online world too.

As a Day Program participant and Hospice patient, I still check on Marilyn every week. While she is slowing down, her sense of humor and ability to make me laugh are still going strong.

Please send your heartfelt gift now to ensure that participants like Marilyn continue to receive the critical care they so desperately need. Thank you for your generosity and loyalty to Collabria Care.

With gratitude and best wishes for good health,

Karen Proteau, RN
Nursing Services Manager
